The Sunshine Coast, a peri-urban area in South East Queensland, Australia, was defined in 1967 to include the Shires of Landsborough, Maroochy, and Noosa, except for Bribie Island. It extends 60 km from Pelican Waters to Tewantin and is 100 km north of Brisbane. Key coastal towns are Caloundra, Kawana Waters, Maroochydore, and Noosa Heads, with Nambour and Maleny as major hinterland hubs. Since 2014, it has been divided into the Sunshine Coast Region and the Shire of Noosa. As of June 2021, its population was approximately 398,840, ranking fifth in Queensland and ninth in Australia. The Gubbi Gubbi and Wakka Wakka peoples are the original inhabitants. The population boomed after the 1980s, making it one of Australia's fastest-growing regions by 2016. This growth saw a decline in small farms and a rise in the retail, catering, and tourism industries. In 2008, the shires merged into the Sunshine Coast Region, but controversial referendums in 2007 and 2013 led to the re-establishment of Noosa Shire in 2014.
The Sunshine Coast's key rivers are the Noosa River, Maroochy River, Mooloolah River, and Stanley River. Additionally, the area features several lakes, including Lake Cootharaba and Lake Weyba. Ewen Maddock Dam, Wappa Dam, and Baroon Pocket Dam have been constructed to support water storage.
